How to Get a Holiday Party Outfit for Free

The secret to getting a holiday party outfit  for free is to have style blogger buddies that have way better taste than you do. It helps if they are as crazy about preloved clothes as you are, and are also very generous with their thrifted finds and hand-me-downs. That's what I love about the Great Circle of Clothes and Bling - it keeps things moving, worn, and loved.

The Deets: Calvin Klein dress (recent gift from Megan); Flower belt (Christmas gift from Sheila last year); Anne Klein Faux Snakeskin Flex Pumps (old); Rhinestone clip-on earrings (had since college)

I have to do a wee bit of alteration work on this amazing dress, which says it's size 10 but looks like size 6, so I'm pinching it in the back with my hand. Yep, cheating, just like catalog models and mannequins in department stores. I'd like to say I was going to an actual fancy party, but I was just dressing up last weekend in prezzies from friends. I did turn on some Prince and shake my li'l tail-feathers by myself, which is a damned fine way to get your own party on, and to lift the blues.

Sasha Jane also loved this dress, and wore it first.

Fellow preloved clothes lovers, what's the best hand-me-down article of clothing you ever received?

P.S. Sasha Jane and I are partying - virtually - with the incredibly stylish lovelies over at Not Dead Yet Style's Visible Monday. Please head on over and get inspired to be your most visible, glorious self!

  1. What a great outfit! I love the belt especially. As a colour junkie though I will admit I would have loved to have seen this in colour.

Best article has to be my girlfriend's shoes. We traded shoes. I gave her some collectible Ferragamos and she gave me her new Miss Mooz. We were both very happy.

  2. Ooh, stunning outfit! I heartily approve getting dressed up just for yourself and dancing.

That is one thing you'll have to look forward to: you'll have a group of people taking the same prereq courses when you're back in school, and there will be holiday get-togethers!

  3. I love the idea of you dancing by yourself, and to Prince - the best dance music in the world. Gorgeous dress and outfit - aren't friends wonderful?

  4. I'm all for cheating in clothes! You look amazing in this and must find a party to wear it to, but you'll need a stapler and a sweater so you can hold drinks in one hand and canapes in the other. Or simply continue the party simulation at home. I can't pick a favourite hand-me-over.

  5. Great dress; superb belt. Having friends is wonderful. Megan gave me an amazing pin which I'm saving for the perfect outfit.

  6. I have a very generous older sister with impeccable style so I have lucked out in the hand-me-down department. My gal pals and I - I don't know, the topic of trading clothes or borrowing honestly has never come up. ;o)

  7. Honestly, the belt that you gave me has gotten so much use, it soon requires a Thursday Mixer post! You look beautiful as usual!

  8. You're looking positively sexacious darling!!!!!!! Oh my how can I pick just one thing? Helga once sent me the most divooon raspberry red 1940s dress, plus a brooch I wore on a turban this week. Clare of Miss Simmonds Says dyed a 80s lingere teddy the colour turquoise and I wear it heaps, plus necklaces from Krista and Tamera. xoxo

  9. I love that you've been dancing around to Prince wrapped in clothes sent to you with love. It makes me feel so warm and cosy!
I can't possibly pick a favourite, I'm thoroughly spoiled by my blogging buddies. In fact I'm sitting here right now chomping on a bag of wasabi peas, a present from Freckleface Tania! xxx

  10. My recently-worn striped sweater, from my very first clothing swap, is the best thing I've ever gotten. It started the floodgates. I'm glad you liked the belt. I must do another binge shop for all my lovely blogworld friends.

  11. I love dancing around by myself - unlike Sasha Jane, my cats find the sight appalling and scatter as soon as I start. Can't think why. Love the dress, you look so beautiful and elegant. I've been given all sorts of beautiful secondhand goodies by friends, it would be impossible to choose a favourite. Clothes, jewellery, scarves, headbands, hats, books, I love it all! xxxx

  12. What an absolutely beautiful, sophisticated holiday dress. You look resplendent!

The best hand-me-downs I've ever received were a box of vintage clothing that had belonged to one of my great-aunts, tied with a great 1950s vintage suit that a dear (fellow vintage wearing and loving friend) passed on to me.

  13. Those mannikins are always cheating!! It frustrates me that I can't just pin clothes in the back and be done with it! That dress is really lovely, though!

  14. That handful of fabric that you can take out of the back has to make you feel good ... and knowing that it's an easy alteration is even better! You look great ... and yup ... shaking a tail-feather is a great blues buster.
Hope all is well your end!
