Geisha Girl

This BCBG Max Azria cardigan, scored from a Marshall clearance rack years ago, goes in and out of my clothing donation bag.

The Deets: BCBG Max Azria cardi (old Marshalls); Banana Republic stretch shirt (clearance); Easy Spirit booties (clearance); a.n.a skinny jeans (jcp not clearance but this is my fave brand o' skinnies); two necklaces like $2 each from different places over the years

Out: It is the most beautiful blue cashmere mix, and I watched it like a hawk until it slowly dropped into a price range I felt was reasonable, like under $15.

In: I cannot figure out how to tie the dang thing. It's short in the back, really long in the front, and has a belt firmly attached to a gathered waist in the back. If you know how, please, please, please tell me.

In this Episode I Get Yelled At

A lot.

I've already confessed I'm excruciatingly shy, and taking pictures of myself still feels weird. But self photography is not only helping my sartorial style, it's helping my actual photography skills develop, too.

Can you see a car in this pic?
The Deets: Isaac Mizrahi for Target dress (GoodWill); Loft sweater (very old Rugged Wearhouse); Obi belt ($1 at The Limited); Naturalizer boots (Ross Dress for Less); Megan Mae Daily button flowers

This morning I felt really bold. Either my coffee was extra strong, or my anti-depressant dosage is getting just right, but I wanted to take some pictures in a more public setting, partly because I was intrigued by the yellow fog creeping 'round on little cat feet.

So there I am, camera set up, remote in hand, doofus-ly (no, that's not a word) snapping pics of myself while reminding myself to stand up straight and not pose pigeon-toed, when a man in the adjoining parking lot starts yelling at me.

Tulle & A Big Gulp Coffee Cup

What kind of fool wears a ballet skirt to work at the law office?

Uh, my paralegal homies might just want to skip this post and pretend it never happened.

The rest of you keep reading, because it did, and it went down like this.

The Deets: Fashion Princess Fairy Style 5 layers Tulle skirt how cool is that (eBay); Banana Republic cardi (thrifted); Rhinestone pin (family heirloom); Shoes (real old, clearly I need new ones)

Paralegal Career Dressing: Visible Monday & Gibberish

Monday Monday Monday (insert gibberish gibberish) hath done me in.

So much so that I'm going to share an outfit picture from a couple of weeks ago. Because I forgot about it. And outdoor pics are much nicer than indoor pics taken on a Monday Monday Monday (insert gibberish gibberish gibberish).

Plus this is my $5 fully lined skirt, and I don't like missing opportunities to tell everyone it only cost $5.

The Deets: Worthington skirt ($5 jcp clearance rack); Easy Spirit booties (Hamrick's clearance); Willi Smith batwing sweater (old); Chain (clearance something somewhere)

I'm linking up to Patti at Not Yet Dead Style's Visible Monday, where all the fabulous style bloggers and real women with wrinkles share their fabulous-ness every week. Check out Patti's super chic crisp white man's shirt, and tell me that's not the next thing that you'll be workin' at work, a la Sharon Stone and Patti, if you haven't already.

Gray Fuzzies

I did have gray on today, but instead of pictures, all I got was a snoot full of paint fumes at work and a splitting headache.

So I thought I'd share a few more pics of Sasha Jane, who feels as luxurious in her blue gray coat as she looks. Oh, someone asked if she is a Russian Blue. She is an American domestic short hair from Megan Mae's kittens (well, her cat's) litter born earlier this year (baby pics!), but she does look and act like royalty.

Happy weekend, guys, and thanks so much for reading Practical Paralegalism, and for just being there.

Paralegal Career Dressing: Mustard or YELLOW!

Normally,  I think of these skinny jeans as mustard, but they look super yellow with navy blue. Which is hot this season, too.

Although I like to think of navy blue as forever.

The Deets: Skinny jeans (Loft sale); Pewter flats (Loft clearance); Loft blouse (GoodWill); Grace Elements jacket (Steinmart clearance @$10)

If you're seeing a budget career dressing theme here (I had on a $10 jacket from Steinmart yesterday), you can score very inexpensive but nice jackets at Steinmart by haunting the Red Dot clearance racks with an 80% off Red Dot items coupon in your hand.

Also, don't forget to wear socks when it's supposed to be a high of 50 degrees outside.

Having no further words of wisdom, I leave you with a picture of Sasha Jane, looking smarter than me. Which is not that hard.

Paralegal Career Dressing: Pumpkin Latte

I think if you're a style blogger, you're supposed to use pumpkin latte in a sentence. Or drink one.

No way.

Please ignore the darn winter static cling in my HAIR.
The Deets: Rafaella Studio jacket (Steinmart clearance); Jennie & Marlie tank (Steinmart sale); Talbots trouser jeans (thrifted); Necklace (Loft clearance); Vintage silver bracelets (eBay); Clarks loafers (Rack Room)

Turns out I had two orange-y items that fall into the color pumpkin category. I dunno if it's due to my sort of ghostly, anemic pallor, combined with my newly wine-colored hair (shoulda pointed that out for yesterday's post), but they both were too big and looked horrible on me.

Ixnay orange.

But I did have a blouse with orange in it. And blues and other colors that didn't make my face run away screaming when placed next to it.

Also, I discovered my boss's office is way better for quickie indoor pics. She has a low ceiling with overhead fluorescent lighting and more windows.

And orange in her throw pillows :)

Paralegal Career Dressing: Wine or Whine, You Pick

Tuesday is the color wine. Unfortunately, not the beverage.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that the more you loll around at home in your pjs on a Monday when your office is officially closed, ingesting sugar, taking multiple naps, and not making the least bit of difference in the world, the more your Tuesday will suck when you return to work.

Firm believer.

Yesterday was teal, but so not sharing pj pics.
The Deets: Liz Claiborne blouse (GoodWill); Loft pencil skirt (40% off sale); rialto booties (Ross last year); necklace (seriously old)

Please tell me if I'm old school, being almost 50 and raised to address my elders as "ma'am" and "sir" and not tell people how much money I make or how much is in my checking account, but if you call someone (as in you initiate the call at your convenience), not once but twice, when is it okay to share that you're calling from your bathroom?

Because in my world, it's never.

Tomorrow is pumpkin. I don't own that color. Well, I do have one kind of ugly sweater that color. I may make it fuschia...or navy.

Paralegal Career Dressing: Variations on Blue

First, let's not talk 'bout me for a second. If you don't already follow Lilli over at Frocks & FrouFrou, I hope you'll check her out, because she's beautiful, has great taste, and sews like a dream. And then I hope you'll follow the link in her most recent post, and vote for her, #190 in the Curvy Blog Award, so that she and her sister, Mae, who is fighting cancer, can win a trip to London.

Second, I called Vogue today to ask about subscribing to their rumored subsidiary magazine, VOGOFF, and they had the nerve to pretend they'd never heard of it, and when I pressed, asked me not to call back. I immediately complained to Miz Bagg, who tried to sell me a vacuum cleaner only used once for actual floor-cleaning, and when I said I don't use my own vacuum cleaner, asked me not to call back.

So, the rest of the week here has been very dull in a manic sort of way. Plenty of people did want to talk to me on the telephone, and if I'd had a camera with me at work, I would have finally gotten that picture of me hiding under my desk, wondering if a valid time entry could state, "undoing the less than stellar stuff people do."

Today's outfit:
The Deets: Peruvian Connection dress (thrifted); Mine jacket (Marshall's juniors clearance); Born burgundy Mary Janes (Amazon); angel brooch (thrifted); pretty much every bangle I own; cool fishnet hose in nude

Yesterday's outfit, yes, I know, yawn, a suit, but many peeps with office jobs, especially in the legal field, have to dress conservatively every day.

Paralegal Career Dressing: Do Not Go Gentle..

...into Those Good Tights

I don't know what it is with me and wild tights, only that I'm wildly attracted to them, but perhaps they aren't wildly attracted to me.

I feel weird that nothing I'm wearing came from GoodWill
The Deets: Adienne Vittadini sheath (@$11 Steinmart red dot clearance with 40% coupon); Moda International no-iron shirt (@11 Banana Republic on sale); Clarks loafers (Rack Room); Floral tights (Marshalls); Brooch (Etsy)

Are my legs too short? Am I too short? Should my heels be higher? Should my dresses be shorter?

I dunno. Only that I'm not giving up on tights that want to blaze like meteors and be gay.

Or something like that.

Bird brooch made by Lynn at Dylan's Dress, from her Etsy shop, A Bit of Birdsong

Please 'scuse my rambling. I'm totally fried. Tonight I hid in bed with the cat, and then ate quite a bit of the Halloween candy I belatedly bought for The Teens. And sushi, half a Rainbow Roll. And sort of felt better.

At least better than I did earlier today when I instructed the receptionist to tell one individual who calls, um, a lot would be an understatement, if (insert this individual's name) called me again, to tell (insert whoever) that I'd died.

I was joking.

Paralegal Career Dressing: In and Out

That's how fast I voted this morning. After trying to vote early and finding only long lines, I decided to swing by my precinct on the way to work, just to see if I could get into the parking lot. Not only could I park, but I didn't have to wait at all.

I don't have a pic of it, but my "I Voted" sticker was my fave accessory I wore today.

Dressed to wait in the cold.
The Deets: Boatneck blouse ($10 Loft Outlet); Clarks loafers (Rack Room); a.n.a. necklace (jcp clearance);  SayWhat cardi (old); Ralph Lauren pants (thrifted)

I know stylish women should use a full-length mirror to see if everything comes together, but a rear view mirror would have helped me a lot today, or at least prevented me from leaving the house with a massive case of "baggy butt." When I caught sight of it in the bathroom at work, I didn't want anyone to walk behind me the rest of the day. The long sweater didn't cover it up, although it does hang over my fingers nicely.

Looks like these very useful stretch gray pants will be heading back to the consignment store, even though they were bought last year because I'd lost weight. I don't know why the pounds won't stay on, but I do know that nothing seems to taste good.  I'm pretty sure a bag of Milky Ways a day isn't on any nutritionist's lists. I know Ensure is, but yuck.

Paralegal Career Dressing: Daylight Savings Time

Here you can see me just start to wonder if I'm late for work.
The Deets: Calvin Klein sweater dress (way old); Jeanne Pierre cardigan (GoodWill); Obi belt (The Limited for $1 with cash coupon); Candies pumps (Kohls clearance a long time ago); Purse (inherited); Pins (inherited & Megan Mae Daily)

Well, the extra hour yesterday was cool, but the freakout on the way to work, with the mid-morning-like sun and the incorrect car clock making me think I was an hour late for work wasn't.

Neither was wondering why it felt like bedtime at 3:45 p.m.

I'm too old for peeps to be messin' with the time. Looks like I'll be beating even the chickens (hi, Amber!) to bed tonight.

Paralegal Career Dressing: Upstaged

I'ma tell the truth. These pictures were taken at the end of the day on Friday, and I had already taken a wee nap. I thought if I included my pups, Phoebe the Corgi, and GizMo the Cairn Terrier, that peeps would be distracted from my baggy sleep face.

But the air was crisp and cool, and both dogs were full of Dog Beans, as you can see from the pics. I'll just let them tell the story.

Lightened up a bit because of the dusk.
The Deets: Old Navy sweater (Goodwill); Skinny Jeans (Loft); Clarks loafers (Rack Room); Yves Saint Laurent scarf (gift from Megan Mae); Cami (Rugged Wearhouse); assorted bracelets, including dog one

Puppy School Dropout

Right after The Absent-Minded Professor turned off the camera, GizMo started to run full tilt up the street and knocked me on my ass. So happy the camera was off.

Hope you guys had great weekends!

P.S. I'm linking up to the beautiful Patti at Not Dead Yet Style's Visible Monday. I hope you'll check out the highly visible women of all ages at this wonderful weekly feature.

Paralegal Career Dressing: My Ship SO Came In

Every time I pull out one of my new-to-me recent GoodWill scores, I crow, "This is my favorite!" But this Evan-Picone jacket might really be my fave. (Until I wear my navy blue Old Navy cable knit sweater tomorrow.) Not only is it right on fall trend, but it cost less than $4.

The Deets: Evan-Picone jacket (GoodWill); a.n.a. multi-chain necklace (jcp clearance); a.n.a. skinny jeans (jcp); Clarks loafers (Rack Room); Dahlia Collection denim shirt (Marshalls)

And you guys, one of the attorneys that shares office space in our building brought in a 150-piece bag of assorted bite-sized chocolate bars just for me.
