Readers' Comments: Craigslist Lands an Internship Interview and Internet Networking with Your Boss

One reader says "no" to befriending her boss on Facebook, but "yes" to having him as a contact on LinkedIn. Nancy, a Tennessee legal assistant, wrote:

I am not friends with my boss on Facebook. I have a fabulous boss, and we have a friendly, professional, respectful relationship, but I am a firm believer in keeping work and social life as separated as possible. He doesn't need to know EVERYTHING about me! Nor I, about him. (I'm sure he's not on Facebook anyway). I would definitely consider linking to him on LinkedIn as long as that site doesn't continue its trend towards becoming yet another social networking site instead of strictly professional networking.

Another reader landed an internship interview via Craiglist. She could not accept the job due to a scheduling conflict, but it sounds like there is an internship opportunity at that firm that someone else might be able to obtain. Deborah, a paralegal student at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, NC sent me an Email, stating:

It was through a paralegal newsletter from North Carolina Advocates for Justice(NCAJ) that I read about your blog. I have found the information to be quite interesting, especially the recommendations to seek out internships. I followed the advice to post to Craigslist, and amazingly I received a response the following day of my post. Last night I interviewed with the firm that responded to my post. The interviewer said she thought it was interesting that I am in search of an unpaid internship because that is almost unheard of, and that since I work during the day, it will be impossible to get any internship in the evenings. Can you provide feedback as to whether it is possible to land an evening internship?

My quick answer is, while I have never heard of anyone working an evening internship, I don't think it is an impossibility, especially for larger firms which may have employees who work later hours or evening shifts. You also might find a firm which would allow an intern to do some work remotely, including summarizing or drafting documents. It might also be possible to work a more flexible internship with later hours for an independent or freelance paralegal or legal-related business.

I am going to give this question to the readers: Do you know of anyone who obtained an evening internship?
