Public defender Jeff Adachi says his office is out of funds and manpower, and has requested $49,580.00 from The City of San Francisco to fund two entry-level legal assistant positions to help with homicide cases. In the interim, he is no longer accepting new homicide and certain felony trials, instead directing these cases to private counsel.
Mr. Adachi and San Francisco's mayor, Gavin Newsom, disagree over the necessity for the funds -- Mr. Newsom arguing that the public defender's office could have budgeted for the positions, and Mr. Adachi criticizing the City for hiring hundreds of other employees instead of additional staff for the public defender's office.
