The Institute for Paralegal Education (http://www.nbi-sems.com/instituteforparalegaleducation.aspx) not only offers great continuing paralegal education live seminars and webcasts, but also sends an excellent monthly newsletter with its upcoming CLE schedule, as well as a list of paralegal association meetings nationwide. My favorite feature is the professional article in each issue, which offers valuable career advice or practice tips for paralegals.The feature article for the January 2009 issue is "Top 10 Tips for Recession-Proofing Your Paralegal Career" by Susan J. Martin, R.P., a New Hampshire paralegal and first year law student. This is a hot topic on the paralegal listservs, and Ms. Martin's article is a must-read for paralegals in today's recessionary economy. Ms. Martin emphasizes the need to have a back-up career plan:
Build a Contingency Plan. Don't be surprised by a sudden layoff. Keep your eyes and ears open and your resume current. Be familiar with the allied fields in which your paralegal skills are in demand. Explore alternative employment options (e.g.: state/federal jobs, independent contractor and/or temporary positions.)Ms. Martin also discusses the need for paralegals to have excellent writing and analytical skills in order to be competitive, a subject near and dear to my own heart.
